Applications being accepted for Mesa Community College’s new Costa Rica study abroad program

Press Release Fun Facts Education

MESA, Ariz. Dec. 12, 2024 -- Mesa Community College launches a study abroad program in San José, Costa Rica, introducing students to the world of international business and economics, May 12-26, 2025, followed by an additional six weeks of online coursework. The program is a collaboration with Texas Tech University-Costa Rica where students will have access to all Texas Tech University-Costa Rica facilities.

The program includes a visit to a cocoa plantation to learn about sustainable agricultural practices, labor markets and global trade complexities; a tour of Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge highlights the importance of conservation and ecotourism; a visit to Numismatic Museum covers the history of currency and trade; while an optional coffee plantation tour provides insights into agricultural economics and the global coffee market.

“Over the course of two weeks, students will have the chance to apply the economic and business concepts learned in class through immersive experiences,” explained Sylwia Cavalcant, MCC faculty member and program director. “Students participate in workshops and discussions with local entrepreneurs, community leaders, government officials and other experts. This interaction fosters a collaborative learning environment where students can ask questions, share insights and gain perspectives directly from those involved in Costa Rica’s economic and cultural landscape.”

"The program isn’t only for business majors," added Cavalcant. “Anyone with an interest in understanding economic systems, environmental conservation, music and cultural dynamics will find the program valuable.”

Cavalcant grew up in Poland during the communist era and said her uncle, who often traveled abroad and shared fascinating stories about various economies and prosperity around the globe, sparked her interest in economics. She’s been teaching economics for 16 years.

“I derive immense satisfaction from teaching economics, as it not only equips students with crucial analytical skills but also empowers them to make well-informed choices in their everyday lives,” explained Cavalcant. “My aim is to help students see the relevance of economics in their personal experiences and understand its broader societal implications.”

MCC study abroad programs offer a wide range of courses and are open to anyone in the community aged 18 and older. The programs, led by faculty experts, range from one week to four weeks and occur May through August.
