Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee Hearings for SRP South Mountain Transmission Project Application to Begin Nov. 12

Salt River Project (SRP) filed an application for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility (CEC) with the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) for its proposed South Mountain Transmission (SMT) Project on September 26.

SRP will present all the route options including the preferred routes, to the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee in a hearing at the Vee Quiva Resort & Casino, located at 15091 South Komatke Lane Laveen Village, Arizona, 85339.

The hearing will start on November 12, at 10 a.m. and continue each weekday at 9 a.m. through November 20, as necessary.

Public comment will be taken during a special evening session at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Participation is permitted via telephone, Zoom or in-person. Public comment may also be taken at other times during the hearing at the discretion of the chair of the committee.

The City of Phoenix is planning for development in Laveen, which could include a mix of land uses such as an industrial and tech park, retail offerings, hospitals, hotels and resorts, residential areas and other new businesses that could bring high-paying jobs to the community.

The SMT Project is needed to support anticipated growth and development along Loop 202 in the Laveen area and to strengthen SRP’s overall transmission system reliability.

To meet anticipated energy needs for the proposed development, SRP plans to build a new 500/230/69 kV substation, together with 2-3 miles of new overhead double-circuit 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines and less than one mile of new overhead 500kV transmission lines.

SRP hosted several open houses and stakeholder meetings to gather public input on the SMT Project. The input received throughout the public process was analyzed to inform SRP’s preferred routes.

Information about the hearing and public comment session will be on the SMT Project website, listed below. If any revisions to the hearing schedule are required, they will be listed on the SMT Project website and on the Arizona Corporation Commission website at https://www.azcc.gov/arizona-power-plant/hearings-and-meetings.
